Smart grid

With the term «smart grids» is indicated a high level of functionality that is currently beginning to be implemented in the control of electric transmission and distribution networks. «Smart grids» are the latest step in the natural evolution of the integration of IT technology in the control of power networks.

Under the term «smart grid» are usually understood the following functions:

  • better coordination between central generation facilities, local (distributed) power sources and controllable loads thanks to a common communication infrastructure for all grid participants
  • inclusion of energy buffers/ energy storage in the grid
  • connection of an increasing share of renewable and distributed energy sources to the power grid (distributed power generation)
  • remote-control or automatic disconnection of unessential loads in order to mitigate power generation or transmission contingencies (demand-side management, demand response)
  • different functions related to power grid security.

All these aspects must be satisfied while ensuring frequency stability, the respect of safety constraints, and economic operation. In particular, the increasing share of generation by distributed and renewable sources makes power grid control much more difficult. A change in the operation of the whole network becomes necessary, which is what «smart grids» are due to accomplish.

The systems and components of CJSC «Communication and Telecontrol Systems» are designed for compatibility with smart grids operations. The «KIPP-2M» smart meter provides already today the full range of functions that smart grids are designed to fulfill, from the logging and storage of detailed power consumption profiles at short intervals to the remote control of loads. With the «KIPP-2M» smart meter it is possible to implement energy-efficiency, «demand-response»-type solutions in short time and with limited efforts. The payback time of the «KIPP-2M» meter and other equipment is short thanks to the lower energy consumption that it helps achieve.
